Tarot Cards ReadingThe Fool - Arcana Major XXII

The Fool - French-speaking people also call this Tarot arcana "The Mat" - is a very special card of the Tarot de Marseilles.

This tarot card represents recklessness or irresponsibility; which is the reason why this Tarot de Marseilles major arcana is not numbered.

The Fool - which was a character very popular in the royal courts of the Middle Ages - is dressed in brightly coloured and multifaceted clothes. Little bells are surrounding the collar of his dress; which enables him to get noticed where ever he goes by their ringing.

His hat, with its curved spikes, is as much extravagant as the rest of the character. Besides his clothes, the Fool has also a lot of common peculiarities with the joker of our usual card games: above other cards, but has no tangible value.

The Fool, in his unconsciousness, does not even need the stick that he is holding in his right hand to help him move forward on the path of knowledge. His left hand is holding a stick where is lying a bundle that contains his belongings. This bundle represents his inconsistency.

As we can see, The Fool seems being happy and taking care of no obstacle on his path, as this white animal that is hanging on his calf...

This Tarot de Marseilles major arcana is not as bad as you think, quite the contrary: if he does not care about the danger and the loneliness, it's because he reached a wisdom that puts him beyond wealth. The Fool has already reached Infinity.

This arcana teaches us that we do not have to be afraid of the future and that we sometimes need to move towards our destiny and to cope with.

Basic Meaning:

The Fool in the right position: recklessness, irresponsibility, turmoil, confusion, lightness

The Twenty-second tarot major arcana in the reversed position: anxiety, jealousy, perversion,...

Examples:

The Fool placed on the right of the Magician: the consultant no longer knows how he stands any more

The Fool placed next to the Moon: madness, thoughtlessness...

The Fool placed between the Lovers and the Death: divorce
